Laptop Screen Replacement Cost: Is It Worth Fixing?
Before paying for a new screen, make sure the screen is really the problem: plug in an external monitor and run the laptop's built-in screen test. Then check your warranty, get a written quote, and compare it with the price of a replacement laptop.
Fixes to try (easiest first)
- Make sure it's the screen
If an external monitor shows the same problem, it's the graphics side, not the screen, so a new screen won't fix it. [1]
- Run the built-in LCD test
On Dell laptops: turn off, hold D and press power. Problems during the test point to the LCD; a clean test points to software or the graphics card. [1]
- Check your warranty or protection plan
Check what your manufacturer's warranty covers before paying. For example, MacBooks with AppleCare+ have a fixed screen-damage fee of $49–$99 plus tax. [2]
- Compare the quote with a replacement
Use our repair-or-replace calculator with your quote and the price of a similar laptop. [1]
