Pink or Purple Laptop Screen? How to Fix the Tint

A pink or purple tint usually comes from graphics drivers, color settings, a damaged cable, or a failing graphics chip. If an external monitor shows normal colors, the problem is in the laptop's own screen or its cable.

Fixes to try (easiest first)

  1. Update the graphics driver

Outdated drivers can cause incorrect colors. Install the latest graphics driver. [1]

  2. Check the color settings

Look in your display settings for brightness, contrast and gamma, and the monitor's own menu if it has one. Calibrate or reset them. [1]

  3. Reset the monitor to factory settings

For separate monitors: use the on-screen menu (on ASUS: Menu > System Setup > Reset > Yes). [2]

  4. Check or replace the cable

Damaged cables can cause color distortion. Reconnect both ends, check for bent pins, and try a known-good cable. [2]

  5. Test with an external monitor

Windows + P > Duplicate. If the external monitor's colors are normal, the laptop screen may have a hardware problem. [3]

  6. Run the built-in LCD test

On Dell laptops hold D and press power. If the colors are wrong during the test, the LCD may be faulty. [3]

Settings, driver and cable fixes are free or cheap. If the tint is also on an external monitor and doesn't go away with driver updates, the graphics chip (GPU) may be failing, especially if the odd colors show in every app. If it's only on the laptop screen, the panel or its cable needs replacing.
